Luke at Two

Our middle child is three now! To commemorate his past year, here are a few things he said as a two year old.

He began using colloquial phrases like “ope,” “real quick,” and “I probby need to…” I have realized how often I say “real quick” (it’s too often) because it entered my radar when it entered his vocabulary. The first time he said it, I remember quite clearly: Justin and I were watching a movie and the kids were in “rest time.” Luke popped his head into the TV room to say, “I’m gonna go potty real quick.” Good for you, kid! You go!

Have you read The Book With No Pictures? There’s a page that says “I am a robot monkey.” I usually read it in a monotone (robot) voice. One day over his banana at lunch, Luke decided to randomly parodize that page:
(in robot voice) “I am a robot banna.”
Other times, “I am a robot train.”

Justin: Do you want to go to Chili’s or Macaroni Grill?
Luke: Chili’s!
Miryam: Macaroni Grill!
Justin: Okay do you want American food or Italian food?
Luke: Italian food!
Miryam: American!
Me: They just contradicted each other and themselves at the same time.

Luke was still learning to talk this year. One of my favorite of his pronunciation attempts was calling lollipops “wee-pops” or sometimes “pee-pops.” Ha!

Luke: What is that?
Me: Barbecue sauce.
Luke: That’s cue-bar-bee sauce.

I overheard him once, when he was a young two, lying in bed, counting: “6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18”

I wrote it down because I was impressed. I hadn’t practiced counting higher than 5 with him. I’m certain he learned those numbers in order from Miryam.

One time, Luke and I were at Chick-fil-a in the play area. Another little boy about the same size came over and touched me reaching for my hand. I’m pretty sure he was hoping I would help him go up the slide, which his own mom had just expressly forbidden. Luke was very concerned. He came to me and observed, “touch you,” then went up to the kid and said, “no touch mommy!” Then he came and gave me a hug and a kiss and said, “okay, mommy,” as in “it will be okay.” It was totally unnecessary, but also really cute.

This last one must have been shortly after Miryam’s birthday. I caught him singing a 2-year-old modified “Happy Birthday” to an unlikely object:
“Happy to you, booger!”

I love my little Lukey. I don’t love everything he says. (For example, “Do not breathe.” Really? I think he meant “don’t breathe on my neck while we snuggle, please,” but it came across pretty hostile.) I do want to remember some of the things he says, though. Cheers to your year of being three, sweet child!
